Sintra Half Day Tour From Lisbon

The final selection of places to visit will be based on the client’s preferences, ensuring a tailored experience within the allocated 4-hour timeframe. Usually one can do one monument, Sintra Historical Centre and either Cabo da Roca or Cascais; you will be able to select/adjust to your liking on the day.

Pena Palace – one of the major expressions of 19th-century Romanticism in the world. The Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal.

Castle of the Moors – taken by Christian forces from the Moors after the fall of Lisbon. The medieval castle was an important strategic point during the Reconquista and classified as a National Monument, part of the Sintra Cultural Landscape, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Queluz Palace – one of the last great Rococo buildings to be designed in Europe, the Palace was conceived as a summer retreat for Dom Pedro of Braganza, later to become husband and then king consort to his own niece, Queen Maria I. It served as a discreet place of incarceration for Queen Maria as her descent into madness continued in the years following Dom Pedro’s death in 1786.

Cascais and Estoril – former fishing villages that became royal getaways. Today they are among the most attractive destinations for the Portuguese and foreign elite thanks to an abundance of boutiques, restaurants, hotels, beaches, and much more.

Sintra village – well known for its many 19th-century architectural treasures. The village has been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Guincho Beach – known for its favorable surfing conditions. This is a popular beach for surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing.

Azenhas do Mar – a seaside town in the municipality of Sintra.

Cabo da Roca – the most westerly point in continental Europe. From the clifftops, you’ll enjoy fantastic views of the beaches and the sea. From the road near the coast, you’ll have scenic views of the glamorous towns of Estoril and Cascais.

We suggest bringing comfortable clothing, sunglasses, a hat and your camera.

• 9:00 – Pickup in Lisbon and drive to Sintra (about 35 minutes), with the plan for the morning agreed in the car.
• 9:40 – Sintra historic centre: the National Palace square, the lanes of the old town and a queijada or travesseiro from the bakery that has made them since 1862.
• 10:30 – One monument of your choice, most often Pena Palace or Quinta da Regaleira. Tickets are bought on the day, and your guide advises which will be quietest at that hour.
• 12:15 – Drive over the mountain to a viewpoint above the Atlantic, with a short stop at Cabo da Roca if time allows.
• 13:00 – Back in Lisbon by 1 pm, in time for lunch.

Which is better, the half-day or the full-day Sintra tour?

The half day is right if you have one monument in mind and want the afternoon free in Lisbon. If you want two palaces plus Cabo da Roca and Cascais, the full-day Private Sintra Tour is the better fit.

Can we visit Pena Palace in the half day?

Yes, if you book the palace ticket for the morning slot. Allow 90 minutes for the palace and park; that leaves time for the village but not for the coast.

Are tickets included?

No. Monument tickets are paid on the day at the entrance, or we can pre-book them for you if you tell us your choice when booking.

Is the tour suitable for children and older travellers?

Yes. Four hours is an easy length for families, and the private vehicle drops you close to each entrance. Pena Palace involves an uphill walk; a shuttle bus is available inside the park.

Can the tour start in the afternoon instead?

Yes, subject to availability. Afternoon starts work well outside summer; in July and August the palaces are busiest after 11 am.
