Sintra has one of the smallest and oldest wine regions in Europe: Colares, where vines grow in sand dunes behind the beaches and the Ramisco and Malvasia grapes survived the phylloxera plague that wiped out the rest of the continent. Which one should you choose?
If it is your first time in Sintra, take the Pena Palace version: the palace everyone comes for, the coast, and a tasting at the end of the day. If you have seen Pena or want to avoid its crowds, the Regaleira or Moorish Castle versions follow the same route with a quieter monument. If wine is the reason you are coming, the Sintra Wine Experience and the Wine Cellar Tour spend more of the day at the producers and skip the palace queues entirely. Families and summer visitors usually prefer the beaches version.
About the wines of Colares and Sintra
The Colares appellation dates from 1908 and covers a narrow strip between the Sintra mountains and the Atlantic. The vines are planted in deep sand, protected from the wind by reed fences, and produce small quantities of a tannic red (Ramisco) and a saline white (Malvasia de Colares) that age for decades. Production is tiny, so almost none of it leaves Portugal; a tasting here is one of the few places you will ever try it. Around the mountain, newer producers make lighter reds and whites from Castelão, Arinto and Fernão Pires that pair well with the region’s seafood.
Practical notes
All tastings are guided and include several wines; children and non-drinkers are welcome and the visits are as much about the estate and the landscape as the glass. Your guide drives, so nobody in your group needs to. Lunch is not included on most versions, leaving you free to eat in Sintra or on the coast, and every tour includes hotel pickup anywhere within 30 km of Lisbon, Sintra or Cascais.
