Arrábida Day Trip from Lisbon: Beaches, Wine & Sesimbra (2026 Guide)
Most first-time visitors to Lisbon head to Sintra. The ones who come back a second time usually ask us about Arrábida. Less than an hour south of the city, the Arrábida Natural Park packs limestone cliffs, some of the clearest water on the Portuguese coast, a fishing town that still lands its own swordfish, and a wine region that has been making Moscatel since the 1800s. The catch is that it is not an easy place to do without a car, and the best spots are not the ones you find on the first page of a search.
This guide covers what an Arrábida day trip from Lisbon actually looks like, the beaches and stops worth your time, how the wine side works, and how to choose between the three private Arrábida tours we run.
Where is Arrábida and how far is it from Lisbon?
Arrábida is the mountain range and coastline between Setúbal and Sesimbra, on the Setúbal Peninsula directly across the Tagus from Lisbon. From central Lisbon it is roughly 45 to 60 minutes by car over the 25 de Abril bridge, depending on traffic and where in the park you are heading. Because the park road is a single winding lane along the mountain, drive time inside Arrábida is slow on purpose: you will want to stop at almost every bend.
Public transport gets you as far as Setúbal or Sesimbra, but not to the beaches, viewpoints or wineries in between. That is why nearly everyone visits Arrábida either with a rental car or on a guided tour with pickup from Lisbon.
The best beaches in Arrábida
The Arrábida beaches face south, sheltered from the Atlantic wind by the mountain, which is why the water is calmer and warmer than at Cascais or Sintra. In summer the most famous ones fill early and the park road closes to private cars at peak times, so timing matters.
Praia da Figueirinha
The biggest and most accessible beach in the park, with a long sandbar that appears at low tide and shallow water that is ideal for families. Easiest to reach, and therefore busiest in July and August.
Praia dos Galapinhos
Regularly named among the most beautiful beaches in Europe, and for once the ranking is deserved. A small cove reached on foot from Galapos beach, with turquoise water against a backdrop of green mountain. Go early or outside high season.
Portinho da Arrábida
A tiny bay with a handful of seafood restaurants at the water’s edge and the Pedra da Anixa islet just offshore. This is the classic postcard view of Arrábida and one of the best lunch stops in the region.
Praia das Bicas
Further west toward Cabo Espichel and much wilder than the beaches inside the park: dark cliffs, wide sand and hardly anyone on it. We include it on our Magic Arrábida Tour precisely because most day trips skip it.
Sesimbra, Cabo Espichel and the coast
Sesimbra is a working fishing town rather than a resort, and it shows in the restaurants. The fish market runs daily and the grilled swordfish, sardines and caldeirada (fish stew) along the waterfront are some of the best-value seafood near Lisbon. Above the town, the Moorish castle gives you a full view of the bay and, on a clear day, all the way to Cabo Espichel.
Cabo Espichel itself is worth the extra 20 minutes: an abandoned 18th-century pilgrim sanctuary sitting on the edge of a cliff, with dinosaur footprints preserved in the rock below. Between Sesimbra and the cape, the Lagoa de Albufeira lagoon and its dune-backed beach are a quiet stop that almost no organised tours make.
The single best way to see the Arrábida cliffs is from the water. A boat from Sesimbra takes you along the coastline past caves and coves that you cannot reach by road. Our Sesimbra & Arrábida Coastal Adventure combines a three-hour boat trip with the scenic drive to Cabo Espichel and Lagoa de Albufeira.
Arrábida wine: Moscatel de Setúbal and beyond
The Setúbal Peninsula is one of Portugal’s oldest wine regions and home to Moscatel de Setúbal, a fortified sweet wine that is the local equivalent of Port. The village of Azeitão, on the north side of the mountain, is the centre of it. Two of the country’s most historic producers are here, and a growing number of small family wineries make excellent dry reds and whites from the Castelão and Fernão Pires grapes that rarely leave Portugal.
Azeitão is also known for two things that pair perfectly with Moscatel: the creamy Azeitão sheep’s cheese (a protected DOP product) and tortas de Azeitão, small rolled sponge cakes filled with egg cream. Most of our Arrábida tours include a Moscatel and pastry tasting; if wine is the main reason you are coming, our dedicated Arrábida Wine Tour visits three producers and tastes more than ten wines across the day.
Which private Arrábida tour from Lisbon is right for you?
We run three different full-day private tours to Arrábida, all with pickup and drop-off at your accommodation in Lisbon and a driver-guide for the day. The fastest way to choose is to decide what you want the day to be about.
Magic Arrábida Tour — beaches, viewpoints and Sesimbra
Our most popular option and the best all-round introduction. Eight hours starting at 8:00 am, with the mountain viewpoints, Praia das Bicas, Sesimbra Castle, time on the beach and an optional Moscatel and pastry tasting. From €153.70 per person, with reduced prices for children. See the Magic Arrábida Tour.
Sesimbra & Arrábida Coastal Adventure — boat tour and scenic drive
For anyone who wants to see the cliffs from the sea. A three-hour boat cruise along the Arrábida coast from Sesimbra, free time for lunch in town, then the drive to Cabo Espichel and Lagoa de Albufeira. Around eight hours from 9:00 am; from €190 to €230 per person depending on group size. See the Coastal Adventure.
Arrábida Wine Tour — three wineries in one day
Built for wine lovers. Cellar visits and tastings at three producers on the Setúbal Peninsula, with the mountain and ocean views on the way between them. Eight hours from 9:00 am, €350 per adult, all tastings included. See the Arrábida Wine Tour.
If you have more than one day, the Arrábida and Sintra full day or the two-day Sintra and Arrábida package let you cover both regions without repeating the drive from Lisbon. And if none of these fit, we are happy to build a custom tour around your dates and interests.
Practical tips for visiting Arrábida
Bring swimwear and a towel even outside summer; the water is often swimmable from May to October. Wear shoes you can walk in, since the best coves involve short paths down from the road. In July and August the park closes the beach road to cars from mid-morning, which is one more reason a tour with a licensed operator is easier than driving yourself. Carry cash for the smaller seafood restaurants in Portinho and Sesimbra, and leave room for lunch: this is not a day to eat a sandwich in the car.
Frequently asked questions
Is Arrábida worth a day trip from Lisbon?
Yes, especially if you have already seen Sintra or want a day that is more about nature, sea and food than palaces. It is the closest place to Lisbon with genuinely clear, calm water and a completely different landscape from the city.
Can you do Arrábida and Sintra in one day?
You can, but it is a long day and you will see less of each. If your time is limited we recommend one full day per region, or our combined Arrábida and Sintra full-day tour, which is planned around the shortest route between the two.
How much does an Arrábida day trip cost?
Our private Arrábida tours from Lisbon run from €153.70 per person for the Magic Arrábida Tour up to €350 per adult for the full wine tour, and all include hotel pickup, a driver-guide and a private vehicle for your group only.
When is the best time to visit Arrábida?
May, June, September and early October give you warm water, open beaches and far fewer people than July and August. Spring is the best time for the wildflowers on the mountain; winter is quiet, mild and ideal for the wine and Sesimbra side of the trip.
Is Arrábida good for families?
Very. The sheltered beaches have calm, shallow water, Sesimbra Castle is an easy visit with children, and a private tour means you set the pace. Our tours offer reduced prices for children and infants.
